New ESL Guidance Document

Our Oakland Schools ESL-Special Education Team is pleased to share our newest guidance document, Effective Interpretation Process for English Learners and Their Families. The guidance provides legal background information as well as recommendations on identifying and working with interpreters throughout the interpretation process to support our English Learner students and their families. The document aims to provide clarification about the role of an interpreter across pre-referral strategies through special education evaluations. Feel free to share it with others who may benefit from this guidance.

The document is attached and hyperlinked, can be found in the ESL/Special Education Resources section of the Oakland Schools ESL website, and sits in our miPLACE groups English Learners: Difference or Disability and English Learner Educator Community.

The guidance was written by your Oakland Schools Special Education and EST/ Title III Workgroup Members:

  • Diane Katakowski, MA, CCC-SLP

  • Susan Koceski, Ph.D., School Psychology Consultant

  • Suzanne Toohey, M.Ed., ESL/Title III Consultant, Curriculum and Assessment

  • Steve Whitmore, LMSW, School Social Work Consultant
