3rd Grade Reading Requirement Update

Did you know that PA 306 (3rd Grade Reading in Michigan) will require any K-3 student who exhibits a reading deficiency, including students with IEPs, to have an individual reading improvement plan (IRIP)?

Do you know what teaming structures your elementary schools will be using to analyze student data and write IRIPs?

Now is the time to begin talking with your general education counterparts and elementary principals adn identify ways for all staff members to be on the same page in service of our students! Many of our K-3 students with SLI, SLD, ECDD, OHI, ASD, or other primary eligibilities have IEP goals targeting reading and pre-reading skills. An IRIP is another lever for aligning core classroom tier 1 instruction with the specialized instruction an IEP provides. Having special educators (resource room teachers, TCs, speech-language pathologists, school psychologists…) participate on K-3 grade-level data meetings this fall will allow your staff to align IRIPs with existing IEP goals and supports. Collaborative participation on K-3 grade-level data meetings also helps general education classroom teachers understand IEP goals and specially-designed instruction, and helps special educators understand general education standards and outcomes.
